Item #2417
SURFACE PREPARATION:
All surfaces must be sound, clean, dry and PRIMED. Make any necessary wall repairs prior to applying. Priming gives you a clean surface to texture and increases adhesion. A white latex primer is sufficient for most surfaces. A white oil-based primer/sealer should be used on plaster, wood paneling, in kitchens and bathrooms, on stained surfaces or in very dry climates.
Drywall and Plaster – Deep cracks and holes in walls and ceilings should be filled (and taped if necessary) with a spackling paste or joint compound. Drywall joints should be taped. Nail heads or other exposed metal surfaces should be primed. Plaster walls should be cured, secure and sound before priming with an oil-based primer. Caution: Old plaster may contain excessive lime that can cause “hot spots” that prevent primer and/or texture from adhering properly. Note: Homax® Smooth Roll-On Texture will be sufficient to cover hairline cracks and minor imperfections.
Concrete, Brick and Cinder Block – Fill in the mortar evenly with a quick setting compound to create an even surface. Allow to cure completely before priming and texturing. Note: This texture is not a waterproofing product. If the concrete surface is below grade and subject to moisture, first repair any holes or cracks with a concrete patch or masonry plug, then treat the surface with a basement paint or water sealer.
Wood Paneling - Fill in the grooves evenly with a quick setting compound, if a smooth surface is desired. Allow to dry, then prime with an oil-based primer. For glossy paneling, rough up the surface with sandpaper or use a paint de-glosser before priming.
Semi-Gloss or High-Gloss Painted Drywall – Smooth, glossy surfaces should be sanded or de-glossed and cleaned of any residue before priming.
Wallpaper – Do Not Apply texture directly over wallpaper. Once wallpaper is removed, wash off all wallpaper residue. If adhesive residue remains, apply a thin coat of joint compound over the adhesive. Allow to dry and then prime prior to texturing.
“Popcorn” Ceilings – For unpainted popcorn: Moisten the surface and scrape off the popcorn from the ceiling. If painted, removal techniques differ depending on the type of paint on the surface. Consult your local paint dealer for recommendations. Then prime the surface before texturing.
TEXTURE PREPARATION:
For ease of application, thin texture with clean tap water. In a 5 gallon bucket, empty the contents the Homax® Smooth Roll-On Texture (2 gal) and add approximately one pint of water. Using a Drill mixer or stir stick, mix to the consistency of soft ice cream, stirring thoroughly until texture is smooth, creamy and uniform. Note: Important to only thin down the amount of texture you plan to use that day.
APPLICATION AND DESIGN:
Use a heavy nap roller, 4“ paint brush or trowel to apply. Texture should be applied to a thickness of between 1/16” and 1/8”. Apply texture in 4’ x 4’ sections. For added effects, use optional household tools (noted above) while texture is still wet. To extend the working time of the texture – Apply a fine mist of water with a spray bottle or use a damp paint brush to keep the wall moist. Texture can always be moistened and smoothed to start again if you are not satisfied with your design.
TIPS: After texture completely dries, we recommend painting with a semi-gloss paint, especially in areas that will require regular cleaning. It is not required to prime before painting. Two coats of paint in bathrooms are recommended to securely seal the surface from moisture. Note: Cracking may occur if the texture is applied too thick or dries too quickly. If minor cracking does occur, thin out the texture to the consistency of paint and apply it with a brush or roller over the cracked areas as if you were applying a coat of paint. A wet rag may also be used to rub out minor cracks.
CLEAN-UP: Clean up splatters and tools with warm, soapy water and rinse with clean water. Note: Tools should be rinsed off periodically during application.
SET TIME: 2 hours depending upon the thickness of the design and humidity level.
FULLY DRIES: 24 hrs
COVERAGE: Approx. 150 sq. ft. for a 2-gallon pail. Coverage of texture varies with thickness applied.
APPLICATION TEMPATURE: Room temperature during application and drying should not go below 50° F (10°C).
STORAGE: Protect from extreme heat and freezing. Store in cool, dry place. May be stored up to 12 months. If water has been added to the texture, it may spoil if not used within 30 days. STRONG ODOR INDICATES SPOILAGE AND TEXTURE SHOULD NOT BE USED.
CAUTION: Contains Limestone, Perlite, Attapulgite, Titanium Dioxide and Crystalline Silica. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Wash thoroughly after using. If scraping or sanding this dried texture material, do not breathe dust. If properly used, a respirator may offer additional protection. Follow respirator manufacturer’s directions for proper use.
FIRST AID: In case of eye contact, immediately flush eyes with water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists. If on skin, wash thoroughly with mild soap and water. If inhaled, remove person to fresh air. If breathing difficulty persists, get medical attention. If swallowed, drink several glasses of water and get medical attention immediately.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
