Works well, but technique sensitive

I used this product today as well as the popcorn texture about a year ago. Both were small patches about 8" in diameter. I was happy with both results. The techniques and steps I found most beneficial are: 1) Remove ALL loose material and use an oil base stain block paint, brushing heavily on the flat surface along the periphery of the area to be patched. This minimizes the "step" created at the edges caused by removing loose material and aids in disguising the patch. 2) If patch is close to an adjacent wall, mask wall at corner and tape plastic down and onto floor. 3) If care is taken upon application, it's best not to mask ceiling surrounding the patch. This will allow a blended feather edge and not an abrupt end to the patch caused by the papering or masking. 4) Pressure in the can needs to be increased, especially if it has been stored in a cool place for a long time. Even at the store, on a shelf. Fill the sink with hot tap water as far as the black neck of the can. 5) The can MUST be shaken very well. With the can upside down, shake vigorously for at least 1 minute after hearing the ball rattle. Place the can into the water. 6) After 5-10 minutes, turn the can upside down and shake well again, as before. Shaking the can will allow the ball inside to break up the largest particles that promotes nozzle clogging. Placing in hot tap water will provide increased pressure. This will help evenly release many more particles and cause less blobbing. 7) Adjust spray to give desired texture by spraying onto a test piece. Start with a less textured setting, you can always dial up. Depress the trigger fully. This allows the larger pieces room to escape the nozzle. Clear out nozzle by spraying upside down until cleared immediately after so you start the repair with a clean nozzle. 8) About 16-20" from ceiling, depress trigger fully. Starting in the center of the patch and use a rapid back and forth (12-14") or a circular motion. You can always slow down and/or move the nozzle closer. Be careful not to spray too thick or the texture will begin to smooth out and lessen dramatically. 9) Spray just onto the old texture to create the feathered edge. 10) Clear out nozzle after use. Patch will turn much whiter with less gloss as it dries.

2x4’ Popcorn ceiling repair (hole in drywall, long story.) I scraped old popcorn off and feathered it out. Used 2 cans. 1 with the nozzle small, first coat and wide open second coat. Worked like a charm. Only put 4 stars due to price. Cheaper than a pro none the less.

1st can purchased was returned as it stopped spraying halfway through. Returned to HD for replacement. the new can stopped working in the 1st minute. Used my air compressor in the garage in hopes to clear the can's delivery system, after a couple attempts at 60 psi, it worked. Due to the trouble of the cans performance, the desired effect was not good see photo, will have to use flat paint to hide pattern.

I purchased three Homax products for texturing our bathroom walls. Two water based and one oil based, orange peel effect. Check out my other review for the water based product. My comments for the other product pretty hold true for this one with the exception of the spray adjustments. The "Pro Grade" has a couple more adjustments which are questionable to their value. Also the nozzle feels cheaply made. Coverage is about the same at a premium price.
Started off great....

Then the trigger got stuck while I was on the ladder. Now I have way too much on the ceiling. This sucks and I have to start over. I paid too much money for this kind of junk!

Directions

Spot prime repair area before texture application to ensure best results. Priming after texture application is no longer needed. Always practice spraying on cardboard or scrap drywall to determine preferred pattern.

  1. Shake can upside-down vigorously until ball rattles, continue to shake for one full minute before use and continuously during use.
  2. Slidered trigger lock back, away from tip.
  3. Adjust pattern: Pointing away from face, turn yellow spray tip to desired pattern: clockwise for fine, counter clockwise for heavy.
  4. Spray at a distance of 18” – 24” from ceiling using a circular (not sweeping) motion. Apply in random pattern, covering only 80% of surface. Shake can occasionally throughout use. Note: Depending upon pattern setting and temperature, distance may vary. Sprays best between 70-80*F. Run can under warm water to bring to room temperature.
  5. Dry Time: Allow to dry 30-60 minutes before painting. Heavier textures may require longer dry time, depending upon temperature and humidity. Texture lightens in color when dry. Clean Up: Warm water.
  6. After Use/To Store: Clear nozzle by turning can upside down, spray until texture is cleared. Release trigger completely, hold can body, and slide red trigger lock to click into lock position. Test to ensure lock is properly engaged.
  7. Paint with 2 coats or more from complete hide and to match gloss (dependent upon color and paint manufacturer’s instructions).
