Instructions
The job requires a 4 gallon or larger plastic trash bag (a plastic grocery store bag will work), a threaded mop or broom handle, a spray bottle, drop cloths and protective eye gear.
If your ceiling texture was applied before 1979, DO NOT attempt to remove it without having it tested for asbestos content. Contact your local Environmental Agency for further information.
- Eye protection and draping the floor and furniture is recommended.
- Ceiling texture is removed more easily when wet. Working in small areas of approximately 4 ft. x 4 ft., use a trigger spray bottle or garden sprayer filled with clean water to thoroughly moisten texture you wish to remove. Wait 2-3 minutes.
- Attach the scraper to a threaded extension handle, such as a broom or mop handle.
- Attach a four gallon (or larger) household plastic trash bag by pulling it through the hoop and draping it over the edges so that the bag hangs down through the hoop. Use the black clips supplied to hold the bag in place.
- Holding the tool almost parallel (15° angle) to the ceiling (a step stool may be helpful), begin to scrape using even pressure and long, smooth strokes. The Homax Ceiling Texture Scraper works best to remove “unpainted” acoustic ceiling texture. If your texture has been painted, it may require more than one pass.
- The ceiling material will fall into the bag. When the bag begins to get too heavy, remove clips and empty or discard bag. Repeat the process until the texture is removed.
- Depending on how you wish to re-finish your ceiling, it may require surface preparation and priming after removing the texture. See you local homecenter or paint store for options and the complete line of Homax interior texturing products.
