Frequently Asked Questions
Coverage:
Varies by species and condition of wood. 150 to 200 square feet per gallon for spray or brush application. Five to ten gallons per thousand board feet for soaking.
How long do I wait before painting the surface after using wood preservative?
Treated wood must be thoroughly dry (after solvent has completely evaporated) before application of paint. Usually 24 to 48 hours drying time is required. You would need to prime first. Any oil-based or water-based will work.
What can I use to clean up the product?
Use paint thinner for brushes, spray equipment, etc.
How do I properly store and dispose of product?
Do not contaminate water, food or feed by storage and disposal. DO NOT STORE UNUSED PRODUCT INSIDE THE HOME. Rags, steel wool and any other waste product may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded or stored. To avoid a spontaneous combustion fire, immediately after use, place rags, steel wool or waste in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
Container Disposal: DO NOT reuse empty container. Place the lid securely on empty container and discard in trash.
If the container(s) cannot be disposed of according to label instructions, consult federal, state or local disposal authorities for alternate procedures.
How does Copper Clear control rot, stain and mold?
Copper Clear controls rot, stain and mold because it contains 15% copper 8-quinolinolate which controls rot-producing fungi. Use before painting on new wood to give penetrating protection to wood fibers not normally reached by surface coatings.
How does Copper Clear inhibit attacks by termites?
Termites seriously damage wood used in building construction. This product provides penetrating protection through soaking, brush or flood spray application.
How does Copper Clear control warping and swelling?
Under ordinary conditions of exposure, wood to which this preservative has been applied will not pick up noticeable amounts of moisture. Thus, wood so treated has dimensional stability and the possibility of warping, swelling, or shrinking in service is greatly reduced. Excellent for all wood types including pressure treated.
After it is dry, will the Copper Clear react with galvanized metal brackets?
No.
Can I paint over Copper Clear?
Copper Clear is an excellent under seal to provide moisture barrier for paint protection.
The MSDS states that Copper Clear is incompatible with oxidants. What are some examples of these oxidants?
Acids, Bleach, and Hydrogen Peroxide are examples of oxidants.
Could Copper Clear or ZPW be used to protect new wood on the exterior of a log home from mildew and fungus?
Yes, they both help protect against mold and fungus. Mildew is from lack of ventilation and sunlight, and can grow on the surface.
Why is the Copper Clear not fully drying and why does my paint crumble off after I apply it over the Copper Clear?
Because Copper Clear adhesion is based on absorption, it sounds as if the customer applied more than the wood could absorb. The time allowed for the product to dry is irrelevant because Copper Clear is not a coating. The surface will only be dry IF all that was applied, absorbs. Clean with a deck wash and let dry. Prime and paint as normal. If it is green wood with a high moisture content the paint will bubble and lift even WITHOUT the Copper Clear application. WOOD PRESERVATIVES CANNOT BE FORCED TO DRY.
Can an oil based stain be applied over Jasco Copper Clear Wood Preservative?
You can apply a Solid Color Stain. A semi transparent stain is based upon absorption, and will not permeate the grain that is now treated.
Would there be any reaction with a wood post treated with copper clear and a metal bracket treated with lithium grease?
No reaction, once the copper clear is dry, it will repel the grease.
Does the Copper Clear have either copper naphthenate or zinc naphthenate or none of the above and what is the percent?
Neither, it is Copper 8-Quinolinolate and it has 25%.
Can Copper Clear be used on LVL laminate veneer lumber?
Laminate veneer is only partially absorbant. The product is for untreated and unsealed wood. Check with the manufacturer for application.
How long does the protection last?
Wood Preservatives in general increase the longevity of the wood one and one half times longer. The copper does not dissipate, however the wood weathers and dries creating new avenues that are untreated. The customer can reapply when weathering occurs.
Is the Copper Clear a good moisture barrier between lumber & cement?
It will help prevent damage from moisture and is a moisture repellant for a time. But it is not in the category of a moisture barrier, it is not a coating.
