Frequently Asked Questions

Coverage:

100-300 square feet per gallon, depending on the porosity and surface roughness. 7 gallons per 1000 board feet for open-tank treatment.

When can I paint over Termin-8?

Allow too completely dry to touch, 1-7 days, before finishing with paint or other coating material. TERMIN-8 will show through the first coat of some light colored paints. Painting is also just an option. You would need to prime first. Any oil-based or water-based will work, but stain blocking primer (either water base or oil based) is preferred.

What can I use to clean up the product?

Use paint thinner or mineral spirits.

Why is JASCO TERMIN-8 better than other products out there?

JASCO TERMIN-8 is the #1 wood preservative in the U.S. It has been around for 20 years, and is the only product available that states “ Kills Termites” on the label. Competitor products say “Controls Termites.” The product also has the highest level of Copper Naphthenate of any product available.

Why are there a green and a black colored product?

Green TERMIN-8 is the standard for the construction industry. Its green color is the Copper Napthenate. Black TERMIN-8 is available to match Creosote.

The product won’t dry?

One coat of TERMIN-8 is all that is needed. Oftentimes, consumers tend to apply more than one coat, so the product will not dry. To resolve the problem, remove upper layers of product with paint thinner.

Is there anything I can do to lessen the odor of TERMIN-8, after it has dried?

You can try to reduce the odor by, cleaning the surface with paint thinner, then use a deck wash to clean, allow to dry then seal with a pigmented shellac.

Why does TERMIN-8 Black or Green take up to 7 days to dry while Copper Clear takes up to 2 days?

The difference is due to the different formulations using different forms of copper. As all Wood Preservative formulations are based upon absorption, these “dry” times are actually maximum absorption times and may vary.

Can the product be thinned?

Use the product as is. Do not thin.

Can I apply Termin-8 to a patio that I plan to later tile? Will the cement used for the tiling react with the Termin-8?

It is o.k. as long as the surface of the wood is dry before applying any cement.

Does it kill existing fungi and mildew?

It will if it comes into contact. However, fungus spores can travel, and contact may be difficult if it has traveled to the interior of the wood. The mildew should be cleaned off first, and then the wood should dry completely before application of Termin-8. A wood preservative is designed as a preventative measure. Although existing problems can be helped or eliminated, there is no guarantee that it would stop those spores that have traveled microscopically and cannot now be treated by contact.

Can I apply the Termin-8 to wood that is going to be in my botanical garden? Will any of it leach into the ground?

The product does not leach into the ground if it is specified for below grade use (as is the Termin-8). I would caution about using in a CLOSED container as the roots become bound and grow into the wood. For wood that is being used as raised beds, it is fine.

For added protection, can I apply Termin-8 to the end cuts of my rafters if I have just sealed them with Copper Clear?

If Copper Clear is on the end cuts, it provides the same protection. The Copper Clear will also repel the Termin-8. You can wait for the wood to weather and apply Termin-8 at a later time.

Termin-8 spray hit flowers, herbs, and lemon trees. Will the plants be harmed and should the plants be washed down with water?

Termin-8 is not water-soluble. Trim the plants and dispose of any fruit that has Termin-8 on it and then cut any leaves that may have it also.

Would washing down plastic and clay pots remove Termin-8?

Termin-8 is not water soluble, clean with paint thinner.

Does termin-8 harm plant life if it is absorbed through their roots?

Ternin-8 cannot be absorbed into the roots unless it is poured into the soil around the roots.

I had a terminate company come out and use a product called Sidekick which they drill a 1/8 inch hole and shoot the product into it. Is it all right to apply the Termin-8 on and over their product?

Yes, as long as the posts have no finish or sealer, and are dry, and exterior.

If bleach is used to kill mildew, moss etc. on wood & then Termin-8 is applied will that lessen the Termin-8 or is it dangerous?

Bleach will remove the mildew stains, If the wood is rinsed and dried, the application of Termin-8 will not be hampered.

Can I use Termin-8 on microlam composite materials?

No. The Termin-8 will not absorb into glue, and would only absorb into a few of the exposed wood particles. The end result would be excess on the surface.

Can this product be used on a bee hive?

No, Jasco has not been given clearance by the FDA. Bee hives are used to produce honey which will be ingested.
