August 14, 2007 - Homax announces new website for testing lead in toys

BELLINGHAM, WA, August 14, 2007; Homax Products, Inc., the distributor for LeadCheck, a household lead test kit, announces the creation of www.leadtesttoys.com. The development of this new Homax website was spurred by the second recall of some Fisher Price toys that were found to contain lead.

LeadCheck is an economical and easy way for parents to determine if their children are playing with safe toys. On www.leadtesttoys.com, LeadCheck is thoroughly explained with concise instructions on how to use the kit, accompanied by how-to photographs.

These latest toy recalls are not the only recalls of children’s products due to the presence of lead. In June, RC2 Corporation recalled various Thomas & Friends™ Wooden Railway Toys. In May, LeadCheck was instrumental in the recall of bibs when a consumer in Mt. Prospect Illinois used LeadCheck on her grandson’s bib.

This recent flurry of children’s merchandise recalls is often linked to overseas production of the products. Although the United States implemented strict lead restriction policies in the mid ‘70’s, many other countries have not followed suit.

Lead poisoning is not to be taken lightly. It is a neurotoxic metallic element that when absorbed by the body, has many adverse effects. Children under the age of seven are particularly sensitive to lead’s effects where their critical development is at risk. Lead poisoning occurs gradually as lead accumulates in bone and tissue, and studies have shown a link between lead poisoning and violent behavior in children as they mature.

Although import restrictions for children’s products will undoubtedly strengthen in the future, for now, the responsibility for assuring a child’s safety lies in the hands of parents. By using Homax LeadCheck, parents are able to quickly confirm that their household is safe for their families.

LeadCheck is readily available from many retailers around the country such as Orgill, True Value, Ace Hardware, Menards and Do It Best.
