How-To Patch, Repair, & Remodel with Aerosol Textures
Spray Texture in aerosol cans may be used to texture small rooms or wall areas. If you have an area under 200 square feet in size, then using aerosol spray textures may be most convenient.
The advantage of using aerosols means no compressor or spray texture gun is necessary. This can save set up time and expense.
A 20 oz. can of Homax Spray Texture will texture an area of up to 70 square feet with a fine "orange peel" pattern. Coverage is reduced to half or less when applying coarser splatter textures. Homax Knockdown texture will cover 8 to 16 square feet per 20 oz. can.
Supplies :
- Homax Oil-Base Spray Texture, Water-Base Spray Texture, Color Changing Spray Texture or Knockdown Texture
- Drop cloth
- Large piece of scrap cardboard
- Drywall Knife - size 6"-10" (only required for patching knockdown texture)
Steps :
- Before you begin, make any necessary wall repairs. This may mean getting the spackling out to help smooth out any rough patches. If you are removing wallpaper, make sure to remove all of the remaining glue (TSP works great for this).
- Prime your walls, whether you are texturing over smooth painted walls or new drywall, it is an important step. Priming your walls is inexpensive and will help ensure that your texture job looks great.
- Cover all surrounding items to protect from overspray.
- Now it is time to texture. Water-Based spray textures are easy to clean up and low in odors, and are the best choice for a Do-It-Yourselfer. For this project we are using Water-based Spray Texture from Homax. This Spray Texture is available in both a 10 oz. and 20 oz. can, and coverage is approximately 35-sq. ft. and 70-sq. ft. depending on the size of splatter you choose.
- TIP: Before you begin, experiment on a piece of cardboard to get the feel of the spray pattern and how far away to hold the can.
- When texturing use a sweeping motion, and remember that texture isn’t paint, you only want to cover 60-70% of the surface. Once your walls have the desired amount of texture, just let dry - this takes between 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the size of splatter you used, and the type of spray texture you used. Once, its dry, you are ready to paint.
